Do you ever asked yourself what is Ayurveda’s real meaning? . Here you will find out.

It is the science of preventive health (take care of health so that disease does not get a chance to get in) and the living habits that check over indulgence in physical senses, going against conscience and natural resistance to the call of the soul (refusal to enjoy the present moment) .

dosha (Sanskritदोषःdoṣa) is one of three substances that are present in a person’s body according to Ayurveda. Beginning with twentieth-century literature, there was an idea called “The Three-Dosha Theory” (Sanskrit: त्रिदोषोपदेशःtridoṣa-upadeśaḥ). Authoritative Ayurvedic treatises describe how the quantity and quality of these three substances fluctuate in the body according to the seasons, time of day, diet, and several other factors. Ayurvedic doshas are markedly different from Latin humors.[1]

The central concept of Ayurvedic medicine is the theory that health exists when there is a balance between the three fundamental bodily bio-elements or doshas called VataPitta, and Kapha.[2]

Ayurvedic Treatment

What if when someone is already ill ?

It deals with internal medicine (kayachikitsa), surgery (Shalyachikitsa), Treating eye, ear, nose and throat (shalakyachikitsa), Pediatrics, gynecology and osterics treatment ( kaumarabhritya) and mental health (bhutavidya).

Body Elements & Constitution (Prakriti)

There are five elements of which the human body is made up of : akasha (ether), Vayu (air), Agni (Fire), Jala (Water) and Prithvi (earth).

Because of the above five elements, all human beings are constituted with a combination of two or three primary ones.

Those are called body humours or Doshas: Kapha, Vata and Pitta.

Any person is easy to treat with the identification of his/her category.

Vata category is combination of space and air elements : People are fearful, illogical and insecure. Skin is dry.

They have thin hair. They have dark brown or grey eyes.

Vata activates the nervous system, hearing and speech and the persons is a great enthusiast with creativity.

However, the state of his mind gets imbalanced easily because of which he gets diseases like insomnia, cramps and constipation.

Pitta category is fire element : These people are achievers, intellectual, fiery, angry, judgemental, with clear voice and precise expression.

They have soft and fine hair. Eyes are blue, grey and hazel.

They are good leaders and warm personality when healthy.

Because of emphasis on metabolism and anger, they suffer from acidity, ulcers and rashes and also thinning of hair occurs.

Kapha category is(water and earth element : They have thick lustrous hair. Eyes are blue or brown.

People have great endurance capacity with calm and steady mind.

They are capable of forgiveness and intense love. Sometimes they are greedy and possessive.

Kapha is the lubricant that keeps the joints working, keeps the body vibrant and balanced with immunity. Too much of it leads to lethargy, congestion, allergies and weight gain.

What is Ayurveda’s Nature of Ailments

After the Prakriti is decided, one should know the nature of the diseases(Vikriti).

It is imbalance obviously, but there are tow extremes to every imbalance, either deficiency or excess.

Those are heavy-light, slow-sharp, cold-hot, unctuous-dry, smooth-rough, solid-liquid, soft-hard, stable-mobile, subtle-gross, and non-slimmy-slimmy.

When corrected, Prakriti or original constitution is restored.

These 20 characteristics that with regards to ones basic constitution will decide the treatment.

These may be caused by wrong foods causing improper digestion, wrong sleeping habits, improper mindset, anxiety etc.

The other type of ailment is clogging or blockage (Ama) for life energy to circulate for vitality.

When this is corrected, it produces energy, perfect immunity, physical strength and hence a general sense of bliss which is summarised in Ayurveda in one word called Ojas.

Some Herbs and Minerals
Malabar nut : bronchitis, asthema, boosting immune systems
Bael : Digestive system
Garlic : lipids and cholesterol

WebMD.com published an interesting article on What is Ayurveda.

Here is a snippet of that article:
Ayurvedic medicine (“Ayurveda” for short) is one of the world’s oldest holistic (“whole-body”) healing systems. It was developed more than 3,000 years ago in India.

It’s based on the belief that health and wellness depend on a delicate balance between the mind, body, and spirit. Its main goal is to promote good health, not fight disease. But treatments may be geared toward specific health problems.

Introduction Ayurveda

Ayurveda is a Sanskrit word, derived from two roots – ayur (which means life) and veda (knowledge). Knowledge arranged systematically with logic becomes science. During the due course of time, Ayurveda became the science of life and now called so. It has its root in ancient vedic literature and encompasses our entire life, the body, mind and spirit.

Another longer definition of ayurveda goes: ayurhitahitamvyadhe nidaanamshamanam thathaa vidyate yatra vidhwadhihi tatra ayurveda uchyate. This verse takes us to a deeper level to understand what ayurveda is.

Manifestation of Creation:

From the essence of satva the five senses are created:- Ears to hear, skin to perceive touch, eyes to see, the tongue to taste, and the nose, to smell. The essence of rajas is manifested as the five motor organs: speech, hands, feet, genitals and the organs of excretion. The mind is derived from satva, while rajas is manifested as prana, the life force. The tamasic quality is also responsible for the creation of tan matra, the subtle elements, and from whom the five basic elements are manifested. They are space, air, fire, water and earth.

Space:

Expansion of consciousness is space and space is all enclosive. We need space to live, and our bodily cells contain spaces.

Air:

Its representative in the body is the biological air, responsible for movement of afferent and efferent, sensory and motor-neuron impulses.

Fire:

Where there is movement, there is friction, which creates heat, so the third manifestation of consciousness is fire, the principal of heat.

Water:

Because of the heat of the fire, consciousness melts into water.

Earth:

The next manifestation of consciousness is the earth element. Because of the heat of the fire and water, there is crystallization. According to Ayurveda, earth molecules are nothing but crystallization of consciousness.

The Three Doshas: Vata, Pitta and Kapha

The structural aspect of the body is made up of five elements, but the functional aspect of the body is governed by three biological humors. Ether and air together constitute vata; fire and water, pitta; and water and earth, kapha. Vata, pitta and kapha are the three biological humors that are the three biological components of the organism. They govern psycho-biological changes in the body and physio-pathological changes too. Vata-pitta-kapha are present in every cell, tissue and organ. In every person they differ in permutations and combinations.

#1 Ayurvedic medicine is less effective.

Truth: It is true that this method of treatment calls for more patience and endurance.

The effectiveness can be cited by this example.

Whenever there is a tear in a cloth or a hole in a pitcher, we intend to rectify it using the similar material that it is made of.

Similarly any fault in human body also calls to be corrected by use of natural resources, as much as possible.

#2 Ayurvedic medicines are slow in showing results.

Truth: The irony lies with the delay from patients side.

Most patients visiting holistic practitioners take their time in trying other systems of medicine so as to derive a faster result.

This not only delays the effect of medicine, it also hampers the working of the drug.

This is because the patient has either tried much more complicated and powerful combination of drugs, the effect of which needs to be neutralized first.

Or in the mean time, his malady has substantially become deep rooted and taken chronic form.

It may at times show to work slowly, but as the fable goes slow and steady wins the race.

# 3 Ayurvedic medicine has side effects.

Truth: Any side effect from medicine, of any therapy, may result from the misuse of drug, either in processing or in prescribing.

As far as side effect or after effect is concerned, I believe time tested medicines are safer provided the former two factors are precise.

The safety of Ayurvedic medicine and mode of treatment may be advocated in 3 pints.

1. In Ayurveda the very first principle in treating a disease is to do away with the basic cause, and also to see that no new ailment emerges as a consequence. A disease is eradicated from its roots.

2. Ayurveda insists that medicine be centered at the patient, than on the disease. The mind, body and soul are considered a tripod and medicine is prescribed for overall health augmentation.

3. Since Ayourvda deals with preparations mainly from herbs and natural resources, it is a harmless therapy with least or no side effects.

#4 Ayurvedic medicines are for older patients.

Truth: There is no known limitation in this form of treatment.

It is equally suited to all age groups. Ayurveda could be considered a boon for children when their body system is yet tender and in process of immunity building.

The natural products do not interfere with their body resistance and at the same time tends to be more safe and comforting.

#5 Ayurvedic medicines are just an alternative.

Truth: Ayurvedic system of medicine is incorrectly quoted as an alternate therapy as this has always been the most ancient and complete system of medicine.

Its been existing before the birth of other medical therapies.

The word Ayurveda is itself derived from Ayush which means life and Veda which means science.

There fore, Ayurveda is the complete science of life.

It is a treasure to provide every individual a life full of health, vigor and vitality.
